Dr. Ashley (Smash) Koenig
Dr. Koenig believes that therapy provides a unique space for patients to gain a better understanding of themselves, develop deeper relationships with others, and acquire the skills to overcome life’s more difficult moments. Dr. Koenig is committed to getting to know you where you are and creating an active, collaborative, safe, and helpful therapeutic relationship.
Dr. Koenig’s approach to therapy is informed by traditional psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as incorporating social justice frameworks, modern cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and insight-oriented approaches. Patients describe Dr. Koenig as thoughtful, compassionate, and skilled, and appreciate their ability to bring humor and levity to the treatment process.
Dr. Koenig works with children, adolescents, and adults facing a wide range of individual and life challenges, including depression, anxiety, chronic illness, trauma, relationship struggles, and substance use issues. They also have extensive experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community and individuals who are considering or exploring aspects of their identity. Dr. Koenig teaches at the university level and conducts research, publishes, and presents on affirming practices when working with LGBTQ+ populations in medical and psychological settings. They are a Founding Member of Academics for the Advancement of Psychodynamic Psychology and a previous board member of the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society.
