Health-Related Concerns and Cancer

Patients with chronic health conditions, cancer, or other health-related difficulties often benefit from supportive psychotherapy. Therapy provides crucial support for managing the emotional, psychological, and practical challenges of illness. This type of therapy can address a range of issues, including coping with diagnosis, managing treatment side effects, adapting to changes in routine and expectations, and navigating changes in life and identity. At Prospect Psychology, we have trained in hospitals, on oncology units, and in health care settings, providing individual, group, and family psychotherapy.  While therapy cannot replace medical treatment, we help patients cope with pain and other symptoms through mental and emotional support and strategies. Therapy may integrate techniques such as mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, and breath work to help manage stress and improve overall well-being.

When taking care of yourself during health changes, therapy helps you make informed decisions and address any fears or doubts that may arise as part of managing your health. Health conditions can exacerbate pre-existing depression and anxiety or cause patients to experience changes in mood. We provide support and treatment for these conditions, helping patients manage their mental health more effectively. Caregiver support may also be an important aspect of your care. Caregivers may experience their own stress and emotional challenges and adjunctive therapy provides support and coping strategies for them as well.
